Made By Sport is an independent popular science web magazine dedicated to uncovering the extraordinary science that lives inside every sprint, tackle, rally, and recovery. We transform rigorous academic research into vivid, readable stories that reveal how sport shapes the human body and mind — and how it reshapes communities, societies, and lives. Our audience ranges from elite coaches and sports medicine professionals to curious teenagers who simply want to understand why their muscles ache after a run. Whoever you are, if sport excite you, you are in the right place.
Our Mission
At Made By Sport, our mission is simple: to explore, explain, and celebrate the sport. We believe that sport is far more than competition — it is a living laboratory for human biology, psychology, sociology, and innovation. Through rigorous yet accessible journalism, we bring the latest research and discoveries in sports to curious readers everywhere, championing sport’s extraordinary power to transform individual lives and entire communities.
Specifically, we are committed to:
- Turning peer-reviewed research into clear, compelling journalism that any motivated reader can engage with and act upon.
- Demonstrating that sport is not merely physical — it is a phenomenon that touches neuroscience, psychology, sociology, public health, nutrition, and technology all at once.
- Giving community sport the same serious scientific attention that is routinely lavished on elite performance.
- Holding ourselves to rigorous journalistic and scientific standards so that our readers can trust every word we publish.
- Amplifying underrepresented voices in sports science, from grassroots coaches to researchers working outside the spotlight.
Who We Are
Made By Sport is an independent web magazine founded by a team of journalists, researchers, and lifelong sports enthusiasts. Too often, the science underpinning sport was locked behind academic journals or buried in technical reports. We set out to change that — translating complex findings into compelling stories that inform, inspire, and challenge the way people think about physical activity, athletic performance, and the wider human experience.
Our team brings together a diverse range of professional backgrounds, including sports medicine, investigative journalism, academic research, elite coaching, and data science. This breadth of expertise allows us to approach every subject from multiple angles, producing content that is as nuanced as it is engaging.
Our core editorial team includes:
- Editor-in-Chief — Oversees editorial direction, commissioning strategy, and journalistic standards across all content.
- Science Editor — Ensures the accuracy and currency of all scientific content, liaising directly with researchers and institutions.
- Features Editor — Creates and edits long-form articles, investigations, and exclusive interviews.
- Partnerships & Development Manager — Leads relationships with universities, charities, governing bodies, and corporate sponsors.
In addition to our core staff, we work with a network of more than forty freelance contributors — scientists, coaches, athletes, and writers — based across the United Kingdom and internationally.

Why We Stand Out
Made By Sport occupies a unique space in science media. We are neither a sports news outlet nor a dry academic publication — we are the bridge between the two. Every article we publish is grounded in peer-reviewed evidence and expert insight, yet written with the clarity and energy that general readers deserve.
What defines us:
- Expert-verified content — All articles with significant scientific claims are reviewed by independent specialists in the relevant field before publication.
- Free and open access — Every piece of content we produce is freely available to all readers, with no paywalls or subscriptions required.
- Community and grassroots focus — Alongside coverage of sport science, we are deeply committed to stories about community sport and its social impact.
- Editorial independence — Our journalism is never shaped by commercial interests. Sponsored content is always clearly labelled and kept entirely separate from our editorial output.
- Transparent corrections policy — When we get something wrong, we say so clearly and correct it promptly, with a full note on the article explaining what changed and why.
How We Work
Our editorial process is designed to ensure every piece of content we publish meets the highest standards of scientific accuracy and journalistic integrity. From creation to publication, every article passes through a structured workflow.
Our editorial process follows these key stages:
| Stage | Our Approach |
| Story Selection | Editors identify research with genuine public relevance, not just novelty |
| Expert Sourcing | We consult active researchers, clinicians, and practitioners for every feature |
| Fact Verification | All scientific claims are checked against primary sources before publication |
| Peer Review | Complex pieces are reviewed by at least one independent subject-matter expert |
| Plain Language Editing | A dedicated editor ensures technical content remains readable without losing accuracy |
| Reader Feedback | We track questions and corrections from our audience and update articles accordingly |
We also maintain an open corrections policy. If an error is identified after publication, we correct it promptly and transparently, with a clear note on the article explaining what was changed and why.
